Base Brown is a 646 m Wainwright in the western fells, above Wasdale and Ennerdale. A steep fell between Seathwaite and Sty Head, under Green Gable, used on the Borrowdale approach to Great Gable. A usual day starts from Wasdale Head and takes about 6–8 hours. This guide grades it strenuous, judging distance and steepness in fair summer conditions. Read a mountain forecast before a high fell, and turn back if the ridge is in wind, cloud, or ice.
