The Lake District Guide

Privacy policy

Last updated: 29 March 2026

This policy describes how The Lake District Guide (“we”, “us”) handles personal information when you use our website and related services. We aim to be clear and proportionate. You can reach us at info@thelakedistrictguide.com.

Who is responsible for your data

The data controller is the person or organisation operating this website at the address you are visiting. For day-to-day processing we use trusted service providers (listed below) strictly to run the service.

What we collect and why

  • Account and profile. If you register, we process your email address, password (stored securely by our authentication provider), and any profile details you choose to add (such as display name, bio, website, contact email, avatar). This is necessary to provide accounts and to show attribution on listings you create.
  • Submissions. Events, offers, business directory entries, and related content you submit are stored so we can display, moderate, and operate the guide.
  • Payments. Card payments and subscriptions are processed by Stripe. We do not store full card numbers on our servers. Stripe receives payment and billing data needed to complete transactions and manage subscriptions. See Stripe’s privacy notice for how they process cardholder data.
  • Technical and security data. Our hosting and database providers log typical technical information (such as IP address, browser type, timestamps) as needed to secure the service and debug issues.
  • Analytics (optional). If you accept analytics cookies, we use Google Analytics 4 to understand aggregate usage. You can refuse analytics and use essential cookies only via the cookie banner or footer controls. See our cookies section below.

Legal bases (UK GDPR)

We rely on contract (providing the service you sign up for), legitimate interests (securing the site, understanding aggregate usage where allowed, and growing the guide in a proportionate way), and, where required, consent (for example non-essential analytics cookies). Where we process data for a new purpose, we will update this policy or ask for consent as appropriate.

Where we host and process data

We use Supabase for authentication and database hosting, and Stripe for payments. Infrastructure may be located outside the UK; where data is transferred internationally, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses or adequacy decisions, as offered by our providers.

How long we keep information

We keep account and submission data while your account exists and as needed to operate the guide, comply with law, resolve disputes, and enforce our terms. You may ask us to delete your account where applicable; some records may need to be retained for legal or accounting reasons (for example payment records via Stripe).

Sharing

We do not sell your personal data. We share it only with service providers who help us run the site (such as Supabase, Stripe, Google Analytics if you consent, and our hosting provider), and when required by law or to protect rights and safety.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you may have rights to access, correct, erase, restrict, or object to certain processing, and to data portability where applicable. You may also complain to the ICO. To exercise rights against us, email info@thelakedistrictguide.com.

Children

The site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal data. If you believe we have done so, please email info@thelakedistrictguide.com so we can delete it.

Cookies

Essential cookies and similar technologies are needed for sign-in and core functionality. Analytics cookies are optional and load only if you choose “Accept analytics” (when GA4 is configured). You can change your choice anytime via Cookie settings in the footer.

Changes

We may update this policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of the site after changes means you accept the updated policy where the law allows.
