Helvellyn is a 950 m Wainwright in the eastern fells, above Glenridding. The third highest mountain in England. Striding Edge, from Glenridding, is a narrow ridge with a scramble in places. Paths from Wythburn and Swirral Edge reach the top without it. A usual day starts from Glenridding and takes about 6–8 hours. This guide grades it strenuous, judging distance and steepness in fair summer conditions. Read a mountain forecast before a high fell, and turn back if the ridge is in wind, cloud, or ice.
