Windermere
England’s largest lake, with Bowness, Ambleside, and the cruises along its length.
Windermere is England’s largest natural lake, about eleven miles from Waterhead at Ambleside to the foot near Newby Bridge. Bowness, halfway down the east shore, is where most of the cruises start. The lake is a day in itself: a boat, a shore path, or a short fell such as Orrest Head or Wansfell. The village called Windermere is up the hill at the railway station, separate from both the lake and from Bowness. Westerly winds can make the water choppy; the fells around the north end are a different expedition.
