Hardknott Roman Fort
A Roman fort beside Hardknott Pass, above Eskdale, in the care of English Heritage.
Hardknott Roman Fort stands beside the steep pass between Eskdale and the Duddon. The walls and the parade ground are still readable, with the Scafell range across the valley. English Heritage looks after the site. The pass road is one of the steepest in England; the fort is the reason to stop near the top.
