Helm Crag is a 405 m Wainwright in the central fells, above Grasmere and Ambleside. The Lion and the Lamb rocks above Grasmere. Reaching the highest rock is a short scramble; the path to the base of it is not. A usual day starts from Grasmere and takes about 2–4 hours. This guide grades it moderate, judging distance and steepness in fair summer conditions. Read a mountain forecast before a high fell, and turn back if the ridge is in wind, cloud, or ice.
